Personal Rant:Christmas Cup Controversy

Ranting about Christmas Cup Controversy

You know things are going crazy when people start freaking out about a red cup of coffee, yet still buy it. A controversy started after a video went up on YouTube of a self-proclaimed American evangelist and social media personality, by the name of Joshua Feurestein, ranging against Starbucks new seasonal coffee cups and their plan to take Christ out of Christmas. On the video, Feuerstein, states “Do you realize that Starbucks wanted to take Christ, and Christmas, off of their brand-new cups? That’s why they’re just plain red. And do you realize that Starbucks isn’t allowed to say ‘Merry Christmas’ to customers?”, while sipping on a cup of Starbucks coffee.

After the video was released, Starbucks commented “Baristas are not provided a script or a policy around greeting customers. They are simply encouraged to create a welcoming environment to delight each person who walks through our doors.” Simply, they are saying there is no ban; it's the barista’s choice to say or not to say it. Feurestein still believing that the barista’s are prohibited to say “Merry Christmas”, he informs “his followers” to tell the barista that your name is “Merry Christmas” so they are forced to say it.

Now, time for my personal opinion and rant.

First off this is incredibly stupid. All publicity is good publicity. No matter how many people say “Looks like Starbucks is losing my service”, it won’t matter to them because they have millions of other customers around the world to serve. Let’s say, you decide to still go to Starbucks and you tell them your name is “Merry Christmas” every time you buy a coffee, you’re still helping them make money. Either way you try to “stick it to the man”; you are helping them not bringing them down.

Second, the cup went from having pictures of ornaments, reindeers, and snowflakes to just a solid red cup with the green logo. How in the world do reindeers and snowflakes have anything to do with Christmas? Those are all things we have created for a perfect Hallmark Christmas, not a traditional religious holiday. With a traditional religious holiday, it’s time to remember the birth of Jesus and what he did for us, spend time with family and friends, and spend time with your church. Not time to freak out about some cute designs on a coffee cup.

Lastly, I feel if it the design is such an issue you can turn the red cup into a positive instead of a negative. You could say it’s the blood that Jesus shed when he died for sins, and if he had never been born on Christmas he would never have done that.

In conclusion, I just feel this controversy is just some way a guy can get popular and famous on the internet. Wait a couple of weeks and see that no one will give a crap about a red coffee cup; they would be more interested in its containments. This big ordeal can teach everyone an important lesson; take care of yourself instead of being in other people’s business and to not be a dramatic queen.
